Eighth grade English is the connector between 7th grade English and the high school curriculum. Students produce two writings: "America and Me" essay and a research paper (influential person in America history) that incorporate grammar, organization, creativity, and research skills. Several novels and short stories are read for enjoyment and learning. Literary devices are identified and evaluated in narrative writings. Students view plot exposition, and then analyze it. Basic grammar skills are studied and practiced. The end of the second semester prepares students for high school, as they create technical writings and three oral presentations. Summary skills and vocabulary, critical to high school success, are taught throughout the year.
